2024 Tax Deadlines and Important Dates

The April 15 federal tax filing deadline is a date most people are aware of, but there are other key dates and deadlines you should be aware of. Keep the following tax calendar in mind to help avoid penalties and take advantage of savings opportunities:

January 29: The IRS Starts Accepting 2023 Returns

April 1st:

  • Take your first required minimum distribution (RMD) for 2023, if you turned 72 in 2022 (exception applies)

  • Deadline for IRA and HSA contributions for 2023

  • First quarter estimated tax payment due

April 15th: (except Maine & Massachusetts: April 17th)

  • Federal income tax return due

  • Extension to file for 2023 taxes (Form 4868). Most state income tax returns also due

June 17th: Second quarter estimated tax payment due

September 15th: Extended tax return filing deadline for 2023 business returns

September 16th: Third quarter estimated tax payment due

October 15th: Extended tax return filing deadline for 2023 personal returns

December 31st:

  • Required minimum distributions due (RMDs for 2024).

  • 529 plan contributions deadline in most states (check your state for exceptions).
